We looked at land formations and how they changed through history and how over time we adapted to it, as well at creating our own historical landmarks. For example, Stonehenge and Silbury Hill and how these were used to symbolised national identity. We discussed the ownership of land through time and the difference between the people that tended to the land, and the signs that showed how it was well maintain through agriculture and grazing. We looked and Thomas Gainsborough and his 1750 painting of Mr and Mrs Andrews, how John Berger critiqued it talking about their attitude towards the private land in the painting.
We also watched a film installation called Arcadia by John Akomfrah, the piece is made up of 5 large screens in a cross shape. The film showed beautiful visual footage of amazing landscapes, weather, seascapes as well as plant formations. I also noticed that there was also of elements of time showing clocks displayed in the the scenery which I found really fascinating. I was really drawn in by the stillness of some of the film where there would be a person standing amongst the large land formations it reminded me of how we talked about the sublime and how people would seek out a thrill of danger.
For our interdisciplinary approach we used deep mapping in response to land and we could use any materials or methods to create our own maps. I chose to use tracing paper and also used appropriation approaches by tracing out parts of a map as I really like the format maps use, I then labelled different parts based on my trail of thoughts and things I did throughout the day.
