ART419/Ceramics Workshop

In the ceramic workshop we were shown how casting and moulding methods used in 3D artwork, here I made a drink coaster and a small plaster tile both using silicone moulds. This was using an Architecture approach as we were looking at the 3D structures and dimensions of the shapes, how they would remove form the mould and how to construct a successful seal for the plaster tile. This was once we made the tile out of clay we would build clay barriers around it. Then leaving enough space around the sides and making the barrier walls high enough, for the liquid silicone to submerge it and cure creating the mould for the plaster fill.

Then for the coaster we combined a one part powder one part liquid mixture, to pour into premade silicone moulds. After pouring while the mixture was still wet we could customise it adding colour to them creating fun individual designs. I experimented with scrap chips and found that adding too many resulted in the chips sinking to the bottom of my mould, therefore resulting in them being more prominent in the base than in the top. It was also optional to add a glaze to give the coaster a shine which I chose to do sealing the design as a final step. This workshop was helpful as if show a reusable method of creating solid 3D forms.
