ART419/Collagraph research

annabellewisiandi1

I did some research into collagraph and how it creates a textured print which is something I want to incorporate into my art as I found it difficult to create a base layer to start from, resulting in most of my art having a white background which isn't a bad feature but I want to develop my work more. I also used an Ecology approach by using scrap and recycled materials to collage with such as: cardboard, paper, tissue etc. I kept building up layers resulting in this bumpy surface that I then coated in PVA glue to harden it using the collagraph methods. This was more of a test sample as I didn't use it as a printing plate, I just wanted to experiment with aspects of the collagraph methods.

I then painted on top as I found that using acrylic paints or a layer of colour gave it more characteristics as I wanted to create a grotesque image to the eye. This idea was inspired by Anna Curtius and her "Body" print series, she uses collagraph to replicate different exterior and interior body forms. This is also something that influence my work as I'm looking at the body form from an abstract perspective so looking at her approach to it really interested me.
