Chance and magic were kind of showing how things are unpredictable and how the end result can go wrong or a possibility of it going wrong. We looked at artists such as Marina Abramovic and her performance art for example "Rhythm 0" where she subjected herself to the public allowing them to interact with her in any form resulting in people cutting away her clothing and even resulting in a loaded gun being held to her head. This linked back to how the experience and how it ended wasn't predetermined.
We recreated Marcel Duchamp artwork " 3 Standard Stoppages" playing with chance by dropping a metre long piece of thread on to a sheet of paper 3 times from a chosen height and outlining where it lands documenting the change.
We also looked at ephemerality the concept of things being transitory, existing only briefly. For example, artist Ana Mendieta and her series called "Siluetas" she creates lots of silhouettes made from nature over a period of time showing their ephemerality. She shows a ritual like process of creating them and then through time how they breakdown back into the earth. Linking to this we talked about author David Abram and his book called "The Spell of the Sensuous" where he talks about a different approach on how the earth interacts with us through sensory using our senses and how the connect with the body internally and externally.
In response to this as our interdisciplinary we created film stills based one photography artist Cindy Sherman and how her images create a different visual interpretations working with perspective, focus and monochrome.
