We when on a trip to the Plymouth Marine Station for the day to learn about what they do and why and the different projects happening there. We were also looking at the Marine Biologists and their approaches to data and research collection. The Marine Station was an interesting experience as they presented a number of approaches on how they went about gathering data from the ocean, for example using remote control drone subs to look at the different parts of the sea in other counties stretching their research further, right at their finger tips back in the station. I was really fascinated by that as there was a room dedicated to this filled with these large curved computer screens and other smaller monitors it looked like something out of a film. Another thing was that they physically gathered resources by diving which is their form of research like ours as artists is visiting galleries and looking for art. They showed us the diving gear they used it was interesting how it was designed having built in technology to allow communication whilst under water being in direct contact with the person inside monitoring them.
We were shown around the different areas of the building there was a large room filled with plastic water tanks where they could take a closer look at a range of different sea creatures and ecosystems and inspect what they found. I personally I thought it was a great layout and one of the more practical rooms we saw. It definitely sounded and look like a long process learning about the diving and gathering resources but its all going towards a positive project. We were told that they share they share their findings with a branch of groups all over the world. It made me think about how this is all happening and we still haven't scratched the surface of what lurks in the deep seas and oceans, but this trip gave me an incite of how they are still exploring and what new technology has helped them discover as well as the different methods used to find and search.
